Carl Schurz
Carl Christian Schurz (1829 to 1906) was a German revolutionary who became an American statesman, journalist, and reformer. Arriving in the US after the German revolutions of 1848–49 he rose to became a prominent member of the newly formed Republican Party. Shurz served as a Union general during the American Civil War, and then helped to establish the short-lived Liberal Republican Party, becoming an enthusiastic advocate of civil service reform. Schurz represented Missouri in the Senate and served as the 13th US Secretary of the Interior.
