Arthur Lloyd


Arthur Lloyd (April 10, 1852 - October 27, 1911) was the Minister of the Church of England, fellow and dean of Peterhouse, Cambridge, academician, translator, and biographer. He also served as an Anglican missionary in Japan. Lloyd was born in Shimla, India, in 1852, in the family of Major Frederick Lloyd of the Bengal Infantry. He was educated at Brewood Gymnasium, Staffordshire, St. John's College and Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he received a first-class classical degree in 1874. Lloyd was consecrated as a deacon in 1875 and as a priest in 1876 in the Anglican Church of William Jacobson, Bishop of Chester. He served as curator in St. Barnabas, Liverpool, from 1875 to 1876, and then in St. Mary the Great, Cambridge, from 1877 to 1879. He was appointed member and dean of Peterhaus 1877-1879. Immediately before being sent to Japan, he served together as head of the parish of Norton and as vicar of Hunstanton, Norfolk. He was married, two children, and an adopted niece. Lloyd arrived in Japan in 1884 as a missionary for the Gospel Distribution Society. In addition to his church mission, Lloyd held various positions in Japan as an academician at Keio University, a teacher at Imperial University, and at the Imperial Navy Military College. From 1897 to 1903, Lloyd was president of Rikkyo University. For many years, as a librarian and acting president from 1903 to 1905, Lloyd was an active member of the Asian Society of Japan, serving as their president from 1903 to 1905.
