Alsager Hay Hill

Alsager Hay Hill (October 1, 1839 - August 2, 1906) was an English public reformer who was active in the late 19th century and influenced poor law reform and employment problems. He founded one of the first labor exchanges and, in 1871, the newspaper Trudovye Novosti, which is still published as Construction News. Hill was born in Gressenhall Hall in Norfolk, the second son in a family of five sons and six daughters, John David Hay Hill, Lord of the Gressenhall estate, and Margaret (second daughter of a hop trader and former MP from Cough, Ebenezer John Collett). Hill was educated at Brighton College (1850-54) and at Cheltenham College (1854-57). In 1857, he received an exhibit at Caius College in Cambridge and moved as a scientist to Trinity Hall, where he graduated from LLB in 1862. After becoming a student of the Inner Temple in October 1860, he was called to the bar in January 1864.
