Alexander William Lindsay
Alexander William Crawford Lindsay, 25th Earl of Crawford, 8th Earl of Balkarres (October 16, 1812 - December 13, 1880), styled as Lord Lindsay between 1825 and 1869, was a Scottish peer, art historian and collector. Lindsay was born at Mancaster Castle in Cumbria, the son of James Lindsay, 24th Earl of Crawford. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College in Cambridge. On July 23, 1846, he married Margaret Lindsay, daughter of Lieutenant General James Lindsay and sister of Robert James Loyd-Lindsay, KKB Vice President, 1st and last Baron Vantage of Locking. They had 7 children, including his heir, James Louis and Anna Lindsay, Queen Elizabeth's paternal marriage to the Queen Mother. He traveled a lot, studied art. He published Progression on Antagonism in 1846 and Essays on the History of Christian Art in 1847. He has become an avid art collector, and many of his acquisitions are exhibited in galleries around the world.
