Wild Life in the Southern Country – is a book, which was published in 1879 and written by Richard Jefferies, an English nature writer of 19th century, noted for his depiction of English rural life in essays, books of natural history, and novels. Nature is not cut and dried by hand, and it cannot be easily classified, each piece gradually passes into another. When studying the habits of, for example, such a common bird as the starling, it cannot be separated from the farm in whose straw it often breeds, from the rooks with which it communicates, or from the friendly sheep on whose backs it lives and sometimes rides. Since the subjects are so closely related, it may be best to take the places they prefer for ease of separation and group them, as far as possible, in the areas they usually visit. Therefore, the following chapters have been drawn up in such a way as to correspond to some extent with the contour of the country. Starting from the highest point, an ancient trench in the hills was chosen as the starting point for exploring the highlands. Wild Life in the Southern Country is a book that tells each of twenty chapters about the wildlife in different areas, starting from pastures in the hills and gradually descending into the valley.
