Life Of St. Columban - is a part of the series “Translations And Reprints From The Original Sources Of European History”, which was published in 1895 and edited by Dana Carleton Munro, an American historian, brother of Wilfred Harold Munro. This book is a translation of The Life of Saint Columban by Monk Jonas of Bobbio, who was a Colombian monk and hagiographer and is one of his most famous works. Saint Columban, also called Columba, was an Irish monk, educator, and missionary in Western Europe. He founded a number of monasteries in the Frankish and Italian kingdoms. His name in Gaelic means white dove. He was born on the island of Ireland, which is located in a distant ocean and is generally considered to be charming, fruitful for different peoples and not disturbed by rivalry with other peoples. Here lives a race of Scots, who, although deprived of the laws of other nations, flourish in the doctrine of Christian power and excel in faith in all the neighboring tribes. Columban was born among the rudiments of the faith of this race, in order that the religion, which this race partly uncompromisingly cherished, might be multiplied by his own fruitful labor and the patronizing care of his associates.
