Book description
This book is one of the series “The writings in prose and verse of Eugene Field” and first volume of "Sharps and Flats", published in 1901.
Eugene Field was an American writer known for children's poetry and humorous stories.
Eugene Field’s "Sharps and Flats" affords an interesting cursory commentary on the British and Europeans and their habits.
His innate Yankee spirit was accentuated by attrition with English phlegm and French frivolity.
Most of his best poetry was written abroad.
Many thoughts, significant phrases, important events in the history of our time, its politics and daily life are taken up here by Mr. Field and crystallized in verses or paragraphs that were appropriate in writing and worthy of preservation in a more permanent form than the one in which it was originally printed.
Mr. Field's good command of English rhythm and artfully worded phrase are nowhere better shown than in this volume, where rhymes and verbal eccentricities are his playthings.
There are several instances in this collection in which Mr. Field attributes verses of his own composition to others as a form of humor in which he particularly enjoyed to the end.
