Book description

The Story Of Libraries And Book-Collecting - is a book, which was published in 1908 and written by Ernest Albert Savage. Ernest Albert Savage was Principal Librarian of Edinburgh Public Libraries, President of the Scottish Library Association and President of the Library Association (now CILIP). Savage has written extensively on libraries and librarianship, and has also been concerned about the training and professional status of librarians throughout his career. Memoirs of Libraries is no longer in print and it is expensive to buy used books; while in some parts it is not up to date. A summary history, published at a popular price, seemed necessary to the elementary school student and the general reader, and the author tried to give it. Compared to other books on the same subject, this essay will seem somewhat disproportionate. But the first period has been considered quite fully, because, thanks to the small number of libraries that existed at that time and their association in centers in which one could clearly trace their influence, it seemed possible to show the connection between libraries and the progress of science more clearly than in the modern period, when libraries were commonplace, and the books are more varied in character and much more numerous. On the other hand, since it seemed important and more interesting to show how books were preserved in the Middle Ages, to describe the role they played in the Renaissance, and the role they play now in the vernacular with all the great libraries of the world founded for the same goals and with similar growth stories. A list of the main books referred to is given at the end of the book. Space constraints prevented chapter and verse citation for each statement, but care was taken to ensure accuracy not only of facts but also of emphasis. To compensate for the shortcomings of the author and to facilitate the tedious short story, here and there links appear to interesting and easily accessible articles and books that can be read with benefit and pleasure.
