Book description
The religious poems of Richard Crashaw – is a collection of poems, which was published in 1914 and written by Richard Crashaw, an English teacher, poet, Anglican clergyman of the High Church, and later a Catholic convert who was one of the major metaphysical poets in 17th-century English literature.
What is religious poetry?
The answer to this question is more difficult than it seems at first glance.
Ninety-nine people out of a hundred would immediately answer that religious poetry is poetry written in a religious spirit on religious topics.
By this definition, Crashaw's poetry is unquestionably religious poetry.
That Crashaw was a poet is too obvious to need comment: that he was a saint is true in a broader sense, that Crashaw was a most holy, humble, and sincere soul.
His poems should speak for themselves.
His poems: "Steps to the Temple" consist mostly of passionate appeals to the Savior, Mary, mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene.
Let the reader keep the book with him and read the verses one at a time or as he sees fit.
Sounds like a recipe, but Crashaw's poetry is a spiritual recipe.
