Book description
This collection of poems of Sir Walter Raleigh was published in 1814.
Sir Walter Raleigh was an English courtier, statesman, poet and writer, historian, sailor, soldier and traveler, favorite of Queen Elizabeth I.
Raleigh's poetry is written in a relatively simple, unadorned style known as the plain style. Raleigh was considered by Clive Staples Lewis to be one of the "silver poets" of the era, a group of writers who resisted the influence of the Italian Renaissance on dense classical references and complex poetic devices.
Raleigh's writings contain strong personal treatment of themes such as love, beauty, loss, and time.
Most of his poems are short texts inspired by real events.
This collection also contains a poetic response that Raleigh wrote to Christopher Marlowe's “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” of 1592, titled "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd".
Both were written in the style of traditional pastoral poetry and follow the structure of six four-line stanzas using the AABB rhyming scheme, with Raleigh rebutting Marlowe's feelings almost line by line.
In addition to poetry, this edition contains a biographical sketch of Sir Walter Raleigh.
