Book description

The Novels Of Honoré de Balzac - is the first volume in a series of novels by the famous French writer Honore de Balzac translated into English, published in 1897. This volume consists of three novels: Honorine, Colonel Chabert and The Interdiction. Honorine is an 1843 novel, part of a series of novels (or Roman-fleuve) known as La Comédie humaine (The Human Comedy) that parody and depict French society during the Restoration and the July Monarchy. Balzac has a subtle way of approaching the plot indirectly and building story within story. The story may be conventional, about a wife stuck in a marriage, but it's interesting to approach her. Colonel Chabert is a short novel, also part of The Human Comedy series. Colonel Chabert, hero of the Napoleonic army, went missing at the Battle of Eylau. After a 10-year absence, the greatly aged colonel returns to Paris during the Restoration. All his property passed to his wife, who, considering herself a widow, remarried. Chabert is trying to return to his former life, meets with his wife, but she is quite satisfied with the current state of affairs and refuses to recognize her husband in Chabert. Considering it below his dignity to resort to the help of judicial chicane and seek the restoration of his rights, the colonel ends his life in poverty.
