Book description
This book was published in 1987 and written by George Jacob Holyoake.
George Holyoake was an English publicist and leader of the labor movement who introduced the terms "secularism" (1851), "jingoism" and "chauvinism" (1878) into widespread use.
The purpose of this book is to celebrate the anniversary of the Industrial Co-operative Society of Leeds and show, by inspiring others, how a few workers, with no resources other than common sense and determination, founded the greatest co-operative store in the world.
Others who have joined the creators or have been their successors in moving the movement forward should be given credit.
Anyone who has organized, year after year, up to this day, amazing operations that have achieved such remarkable success are equally entitled to the reputation of a great enterprise.
The directors honored the author and asked him to write this Jubilee History from 1847 to 1897.
The author knew about the co-operation when it was born.
He stood at his cradle.
In every magazine, newspaper, and review the author was associated with, he defended it in infancy when no one thought they would survive.
For many years, the author was their only friend and press representative.
The author lived to see how he developed into a strong and self-supporting manhood.
George Holyoake is not very pleased that the last co-operative work the author is likely to write is a history of victories for the Leeds Society.
As he becomes more widely known for his Jubilee story, his remarkable distinction will be recognized.
