Book description

This book consists of two plays by Thomas Haywood, an English playwright, actor, and author, and William Rowley, an English Jacobean dramatist, best known for writing in collaboration with more successful writers. The Beautiful Stock Exchange Maiden - is a Renaissance comedy play often attributed to Thomas Heywood. First printed in 1607, the play was subsequently reprinted in 1625 and 1637. It tells the story of three wealthy brothers - Ferdinand, Anthony and Frank - who are in love with Phyllis, a beautiful girl, and vie for her affection. The Phyllis, however, is determined to win favor f the Cripple of Fanchurch, despite his indifference to her. The play takes place in Elizabethan London. Fortune by Land and Sea - is a stage play from the Jacobean era, a tragic-comedy written by Thomas Heywood and William Rowley. The play attracted the attention of modern critics by contrasting the themes of primogeniture and piracy. The play compares the fates of her characters in two radically different spheres of life experience: those who live a traditional English life on land are subject to the strict restrictions of the primogeniture system, while escaping at sea means a life of anarchic freedom, danger and opportunity. Heywood has used the theme of piracy in other works, in particular, in his play "The Fair Maid of the West", which consists of two parts. In Fortune by Land and Sea, the playwrights base their plot on real events during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, which are described in a pamphlet from 1583. Playwrights recalled the Elizabethan era of optimism and expansionism, the Jacobin era, which clearly lacked these traits.
