Book description
This translation of "Hell" of Dante's Divine Comedy is by Charles Eliot Norton, an American social critic, writer and professor of art from New England.
There are so many versions of the Divine Comedy in English that a new one may seem unnecessary.
Most translations of the Divine Comedy are poetic, therefore the intellectual disposition of our time is impatient for transmutation, as a result of which the substance is sacrificed for the sake of the form, and the new form itself differs from the original.
The conditions of the poem in different languages differ so widely that any poetic translation of the poem is obtained, but an imperfect reproduction of the archetype.
In "Hell" Dante builds a strict system of the afterlife, based on the point of view of Catholic Christianity, representing Hell in the form of nine circles surrounding Lucifer frozen into the ice.

I had read several good reviews for this book by people whose opinions I trust so I expected that I would like it too. I was surprised by how much I liked it and how very readable it was!
