Book description
The Christian Society – is a course of lectures written by George D. Herron.
He was an American clergyman, writer, lecturer and Christian social activist.
In publishing these lectures, the author wanted to point out that no institution, no organization, no particular school of thought or fellowship of people bears any responsibility for beliefs - the author does not have the opinions that he expresses here. For these expressions, the author alone must be responsible to people, just as he will be responsible to God.
The author spoke not to discredit, but rather to glorify the church.
The author would like the church to become the embodiment and representative of Jesus in the removal of the sins of society; being rejected by the proud, selfish and powerful, to bring deliverance to the captives of social tyranny and to preach the gospel of the kingdom of God to the people.
The author would like to see a church glorified by the glory that Jesus had on the cross and sanctified by a temper that did not make His reputation in his own eyes.
The church was not sent to be an institutional dominion, but to a sacrificial and redemptive life in the world.
Yet the church is not concerned with sacrifice and atonement, but with artificial organization; did not participate in distinguishing and teaching right from wrong, and not so much in defining doctrines. The analogy between Protestant Christianity in relation to its mission of social redemption and the attitude of the Jewish Church to the first appearance of the Son of God is correct.
The author was constantly haunted by the vision of a living Jesus weeping over our majestic temples of worship, our theological halls, and our religious conventions.
The coming social incarnation of the Son of God is today attending church.
Will the church learn of their visit or sentence Christ to a public crucifixion?
This edition consists of five lectures: The Scientific Ground of a Christian Sociology; The Christian Constitution of Society; The Gospel of Jesus to the Poor; The Message of Jesus to Men of Wealth; and The Political Economy of the Lord's Prayer.
