Book description
This volume has been prepared to assist teachers and students in laboratory studies.
For students who want to continue working with the microscope while in college, these pages will be of some value.
However, many medical practitioners, not having advantages during their studies equal to those provided by modern laboratory equipment, want to gain more knowledge about microscopy because of its value in practical medicine.
The author wanted to be useful to such workers too.
So many techniques were introduced that proved to be absolutely necessary, and nothing more.
The processes for preparing and displaying fabrics are usually straightforward and always practical.
When describing organs, the author assumes that the student has a good knowledge of gross anatomy, but knows nothing about histology.
The outline or outline of the structure is first described using diagrams where clarity is required, after which the method of preparation of the sections is indicated and, in practical demonstration, each histological detail is tabulated in the proper order.
The author believes that the drawings will help in recognizing such elements in the field of view of the microscope.
Illustrations are accurate photographs of the author's own artwork; and one must always distinguish between drawings that are schematic - used to emphasize the plan of structures - and drawings taken from tissue visible through a microscope.
The literature is replete with excellent work for advanced learners, and this volume is intended to pave the way for their appreciation.
A revision of Miller's microscopy has become necessary, partly because of advances in histology over the past decade and partly because of the growing trend in medical schools to devote more time to laboratory research.
Almost all of the original material has been retained, albeit slightly modified; and where new material was inserted, an attempt was made to give it a form that was a feature of the original, namely that it was written from the point of view of the student and not the teacher.
In preparing the various additions, the standard histology textbooks were constantly consulted.
