Book description

This book is an account of the last ten years of the reign of Charles II, King of Spain since 1665, and the last representative of the House of Habsburgs on the Spanish throne. This report was written by Alexander Stanhope, British ambassador to the Spanish court from 1690 to 1999. This book provides a prime example of a declining empire. After the death of Charles II, the country was left without an heir, which led to the war for the Spanish throne in 1700. The book contains excerpts from the correspondence of Alexander Stanhope himself, which reveal first-hand the history of events in Spain at that time.
