Book description

Sappho – is a realistic novel which was published in 1886 and written by Alphonse Daudet. Daudet was a French novelist and playwright of 19th century, famous for his vivid, often comic stories from the life of the southern regions - Provence and Languedoc. This is the love story of student Jean Gaussin and courtesan Fanny Legrand, nicknamed Sappho. In the center of the novel is the lady of the half-light, Fanny Legrand, nicknamed Sappho. Fanny is not a simple courtesan, but a person with extraordinary abilities. Fanny wants to love, is ready for self-sacrifice, but she bears the stigma of a fallen woman. At the heart of the moral problem, Sappho has an appreciation for the Daudet of an entire generation of young people, as well as an account of the age-old dilemma of a lover who must choose between freedom and pity for the girl he leaves behind.
