Romano Lavo-lil: Word-book of the Romany; Or, English Gypsy Language

Romano lavo-lil: word-book of the Romany; or, English Gypsy language – is a book which was published in 1905 and written by George Borrow. He was an English writer and traveler of the 19th century, a well-known expert on Gypsy culture in his time. The Roma of England call their language, as the Roma of many other countries call their language, Romanes or Romany, the word comes either from the Indian Ram or Rama, which means husband, or from the city of Rome, which got its name from the Indian Ram, or from the Gaulic word Rom , which is almost equivalent to a husband or a man, for as the Indian Ram means a husband or a man, so Gaulic Rom means that which constitutes a man and allows him to become a husband. The author of this work wishes to declare that the Dictionary included in it has existed in manuscript for many years. It is one of several dictionaries of various dialects of the Romani language, compiled by him in different countries. The most significant of these, the Zincali or Rumijelies (Romany Chals) dialect in Spain, was published in 1841. Among those still unpublished is one of the works of Gypsies from Transylvania, made mainly in Kolosvar in 1844. This book also includes samples of Gypsy poetry, a record of some Gypsies or the place where they live, and various things relating to Gypsy life in England.
