This series of school textbooks is based on the principle that children can be taught to write and read from thousands of English words by sound as easily as words are taught in German schools. This method has long been used in schools under the guidance of the author and in the direction of home teaching of his children. The current irrational spelling of some English words and the unscientific methods often used in teaching all of our words are often an insurmountable obstacle to the acquisition of knowledge of the art of reading by a large class of children who could not go to school long enough to learn to read with sufficient ease and fluency to fall in love with literature before they have to drop out of school to engage in a bitter struggle for bread. It is impossible to change the irrational spelling, but adhere to the scientific method of teaching reading is open to all teachers. To create such a book was the aspiration of the author of this small work. It is his sincere desire to do something to smooth out the poor layers of English-speaking children - the rich have plenty of time ahead of them - the difficult path that leads into the green fields of noble English literature, of which they, too, are rightful heirs by birth. Regardless of whether he has achieved any degree of success in his difficult endeavor, he leaves his fellow teachers to impartial judgment.
