Book description

In ole Virginia – is a collection of short stories which was published in 1887 and written by Thomas Nelson Page. He was an American writer and lawyer. Nelson Page popularized the southern plantation tradition in his publications. "In Ole Virginia" is Page's quintessential depiction of the pre-war South. The most famous story from this collection is Mars Chan. This story was popularized due to Nelson Page's ability to capture southern dialect. The East Virginia Afro-American dialect is completely different from the Southern Afro-American dialect, and in some material respects from the dialect of those located further west. The elision is so constant that it is impossible to reproduce the exact sound, and in some cases it was considered necessary to subordinate the phonetic arrangement to intelligibility.
