History of the Chisholms: with genealogies of the principal families of the name

The History of the Chisholms presented in this volume is not an ambitious work. The materials are not extensive, and those that are available are not of an important or exciting nature. The author claims to have refuted the absurd and unsubstantiated allegations held by the northern clan for so long that they descended from the Earls of Caithness and the Orkney Islands, and, on the contrary, established that they first came to the Highland from the Scottish borders, and that all families of this name, northern and southern, can trace their lineage to a common ancestor, which was first heard in Scotland in the county of Roxburgh towards the end of the thirteenth century. According to the views and writings of Alexander Mackenzie, Scottish historian of the 19th century and author of this work, the Chisholm clan is of Norman and Saxon origin. According to historical tradition, the Chisholms were a Norman aristocratic family who settled in England after the Norman Conquest in 1066.
