German Word-Book. A Comparative Vocabulary Displaying the Close Affinity Between the German and English Languages

German Word-Book – is a work written by Adolphus Bernays. He was the first professor of German at King's College London and the second professor of German in England. The purpose of this small volume is threefold. First of all, it is an encouragement to the learner of German, showing him the great closeness that exists between this language and his own. Secondly, to facilitate the student's work by providing him with a large number of words arranged so that they can be easily memorized. And, thirdly, to draw the student's attention to the etymology as a whole, showing before him in a simple dictionary form the development of a language from a relatively small number of roots and stems and the formation of words by internal changes or the addition of prefixes or affixes. Since the book was intended to be used primarily by beginners, it begins with the alphabet followed by a series of concise rules and examples for correct pronunciation.
