Book description

Garth – is a novel, which was published in 1877 in three volumes and written by Julian Hawthorne, an American journalist and writer as well as the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne. This book is the last third volume of this novel. Garth Urmson, the protagonist of the novel, is a member of the New Hampshire family that is under a hereditary curse. In the 17th century, the founder of the Urmson family in America desecrated a sacred Indian grave. Since then, the shadow of the crime has been on his descendants. Garth, the last member of the family, seems to be carrying all their worries and sorrows; but at the same time he feels the dignity that belongs to them by right of many noble qualities. He is a lofty dreamer. However, he cannot escape misfortune. Garth Urmson's love affairs with two women, Elinor Lenterden and Madge Danvers, are unhappy as they are controlled by a hereditary curse.
