Gardening for profit - is an illustrated guide to the successful cultivation of the market and family garden, which was published in 1874 and witten by Peter Henderson, the father of ornamental horticulture in the United States. There are quite a few works, agricultural or horticultural, by American authors whose writers are practical people, and even fewer are those who have "risen from the ranks." To this cause, perhaps more than any other, may be attributed the widespread prejudice against book farming and book gardening, by which thousands of people cut themselves off from information whose possession could save years of useless labor and deprivation. The author had experience in all areas of horticulture from early childhood, and even at a conscious age he was much better versed in his manual operations than in his literature, and therefore was forced to write the following pages only at the repeated requests of friends and correspondents, whose questions relating to commercial horticulture, the author's time no longer allowed him to answer individually. The author has tried to be as concise and clear as possible, avoiding complex or theoretical questions that all too often serve only to confuse and discourage the person who is looking only for instructions to help him practice. Although these guidelines are mainly intended for the market garden or for work on a large scale, nevertheless, the amateur or private gardener can easily modify them to meet the smallest requirements. The number of varieties of each vegetable described here is very small compared to those that are known or whose seeds are offered for sale.
