Book description

Language learning is often too much about sentence forms and too little about thought. Grammar training has little effect on the correctness of everyday expression. The child must constantly engage in the formation of accurate ideas about the objects of learning, as well as their clear and accurate expression. Language is simply a means of expressing thoughts, and it is important to remember its nature and purpose. The value of the lessons in this book is to be found in the observation and reflection habits they teach and in the practice they give to form accurate ideas and express them clearly. The things they see every day, pictures, favorite stories, animals, writing letters, and so on - objects over which children spontaneously express their thoughts - serve as material for these lessons. The terms "noun", "verb", "adjective", etc. were used for convenience, and not for the purpose of definition and accurate grammatical classification. Children will soon become familiar with them and use them appropriately, just as they use many other class words that they cannot formally define. Most of the exercises in this book have been tested in practice.
