Book description
An Old-High-German Primer – is a work written by Joseph Wright, British philologist and dialectologist, and published in 1888.
In this elementary book, of course, it is impossible even to describe all the phenomena of sound change inherent in Old High German as a whole, especially if you try to distinguish between Upper German and Upper Franconian dialects.
However, the author has tried to convey in a relatively small compass all the really more important features of the language and fully believes that a beginner who deliberately works on a book will acquire such a solid basic knowledge of the language as will allow him to continue his further study of the German language with little difficulty, be it from a literary or purely linguistic point of view.
The Old High German means the High German language from the beginning of its earliest monuments in the 8th century up to about the end of the 11th century.
This book treats principally the language as it obtained in the 9th century.
The primer divided into four parts, such as: Grammar; Texts; Notes and Glossary.
