Book description

"Arms and Man" opens a cycle of 4 plays (1894-1896), which the author ironically called "Plays Pleasant" when published. This cycle includes, in addition to this, the plays Candida, The Man of Destiny, You Never Can Tell. The ideological basis of this play was Shaw's desire to expose the reality-distorting romantic attitude towards life (and especially the hypocritical romanticization of war). The show calls for opposing this worldview with rational realism, "philosophy of reality", only they are able to pose and solve real problems. The bright, funny and witty comedy turned out to be the first play by Bernard Shaw to be commercially successful not only in Great Britain.
