Book description
A Selection From The Poems Of Giosue Carducci – is a collection of poems by Giosue Carducci translated into English by Emily Ann Tribe and published in 1921.
Giosue Carducci was an Italian poet, literary critic, writer and teacher of the 19th century, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1906).
This book is an attempt to present some of Giosue Carducci’s poems in English poetry without considering the objections raised by many critics against this form of translation, and the advantages of the greater ease and literality possible for the prose version.
But while prose may well convey dramatic and even narrative verse, it seemed completely impossible for the translator to produce the effect of lyric poetry in this environment.
No one knows better than a translator how inferior to her translation is the beauty of the original.
Her goal was to give as literal an image as the needs of metric forms allowed.
She also tried to keep as close as possible to the metric forms that Carducci used.
