A history of Mediaval political theory in the West – is the second volume from six and written by Sir Robert Warrand Carlyle and Alexander James Carlyle. Robert Warrand Carlyle was an Indian Civil Servant as well as and historian on Western medieval period. In the second volume, the treatment of the political theory of the great period of the Middle Ages begins, and the first volume of this series has the character of an introduction to this. The material, on closer examination, turned out to be so large and complex that the authors were forced to devote an entire volume to the political ideas embodied in the two great legal systems that came directly from the ancient world. In view of the fact that it is quite difficult and dangerous for the student of history, without a technical legal background, to deal with these great legal documents, the assistance of a number of scholars eminent in civil and canon law was therefore enlisted.
