John Keble

John Keble (25 April 1792 to 29 March 1866) was an English churchman and poet who was a leader of the Oxford Movement.  Born in Fairford, Gloucestershire, his father,m who was also John Keble, was vicar of Coln St. Aldwyns. Both he and his brother Thomas were educated at home by their father until trhey attended Oxford. Keble won a scholarship to Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1806. Excelling in his studies, in 1810 he achieved a double first class in Latin and mathematics. In 1811 he won the university prizes for English and Latin essays and became a fellow at Oriel College, where for some years he remained a tutor and examiner. He was ordained in 1816, and became a curate to his father and then curate of St Michael and St Martin's Church in Eastleach Martin, Gloucestershire, whilst still living at Oxford. Upon the death of his mother in 1823, he left Oxford and returned to live at home in Fairford with his father and two sisters. Three times between 1824 and 1835 he was offered a position but always declined on the grounds that he could not separate from his father and surviving sister. He was nominated as provost of Oriel Collegein 1828 but not elected. However, Keble College, Oxford, was named after him.
